The Pawdicure Guide: Keeping Your Pup's Paws in Tip-Top Shape

Spring and summer bring long days of fun, sun, and outdoor adventures. Frolicking and sashaying about takes a toll on our beloved companions’ paws. From blistering hot sidewalks to muddy trails, your dog's paws go through a lot. That's why regular pawdicures are a must to keep them healthy and happy!

Sundae visits her spaw, Bubbly Paws (Keller) every two weeks for a nail grind. Her nails grow so quickly which is problematic; she paws my forearm for attention which can mean deep scratches and other unpleasantries. It’s critical to me that her nails are trimmed and filed regularly. Her paw pads get shaved during regular grooming visits and her paws are cleaned daily.

Why Pawdicures Matter

Your dog’s paws are their connection to the world, so keeping them in good shape is essential. Proper paw care can help prevent discomfort, injury, and even infections. Plus, who doesn’t love silky-soft toe beans?

Essential Elements of a Pawdicure

  1. Correct Nail Length
Keeping your pup’s nails trimmed to the correct length is crucial. Overgrown nails can cause pain, alter their gait, and even lead to joint problems over time. Aim for nails that just barely touch the ground when your pup is standing.

  2. Clean Paw Pads
Whether it’s dirt, allergens, or chemicals from lawn treatments, your dog’s paws can collect all sorts of unwanted grime. Regularly wiping down and gently washing their paw pads helps prevent irritation and infection.

  3. Moisturized Toe Beans
Dry, cracked paw pads can be painful, especially during the hotter months when surfaces can be scorching. Keeping those toe beans moisturized with a dog-safe balm or moisturizer ensures they stay soft, smooth, and protected.

Why Spring & Summer Paw Care Is Essential

During the warmer months, your pup’s paws face more challenges. From hot pavement to rough terrain and even swimming, their paws need extra TLC. Regular pawdicures not only keep them looking fabulous but also feeling their best.
